The perception of food and especially meat nowadays is far removed from the notion that the meat on our plate was actually part of a sentient being. A living being with feelings and a social personality, that did not choose to be born as a part of live-stock, nor to be butchered in a slaughterhouse.
The Animal Save Movement is a worldwide movement that wants to bear witness – seeing the animals, giving them one last moment of respect, attention and affection on their way to the slaughterhouse. Their local chapters hold peaceful vigils in front of slaughterhouses all over the world. Trying to make the truck drivers stop for a couple of minutes, so that the activists can at least spend some moments with the animals, to caress them or just be there for them. Often times this is the only affectionate gesture they experienced during their short lives filled with suffering.
With my project „We See You“ I tried to come to terms with the experiences made during the vigils, finding a form that reflects these daily atrocities while also concentrating on individuals – the ones on their way to be slaughtered but also the ones standing up against this aspect of the food production and industry.
