Last October, animal rights and climate activists of the action group “Tear Down Tönnies” blocked a slaughterhouse belonging to the Tönnies coperation for about 11 hours.

Their goal was to shine a light on the bad working conditions, the endless suffering of the animals and the climate- and environmental burden.

Now, Tönnies is claiming a compensation of around 40.000 Euro from those activists. But they won’t be intimidated and are ready to face them in court.

Two weeks ago, around 200 people came together in the city of Kellinghusen, where the slaughterhouse is located, to once again demonstrate against the corporation and show support for the ones being charged right now.

And to criticize this System, which is the criminal one – and not the activists, who are raising their voices against it.

Zulu treffe ich manchmal morgens beim Hundespaziergang – so schöne und sanfte Wesen. Mit dem sogenannten Saugentwöhner, den Zulu in der Nase trägt, werden Kälber daran gehindert bei ihren Müttern die für sie bestimmte Milch zu trinken – unfassbar, was Mensch sich alles einfallen lässt, um aus unseren Mitgeschöpfen Profit zu schlagen.

Corona trifft auch die Tauben in den Städten – die Straßen sind weitgehend leer. Die Tauben finden kaum mehr Nahrung und drohen zu verhungern.

Die Landeshauptstadt Kiel hat das Tierheim Uhlenkrog autorisiert, die Tauben mit artgerechtem Futter zu versorgen.

Ehrenamtliche Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen des Tierheims versorgen die Tiere.

Fast 2000 Leute haben am Samstag Sturm und Regen in Kiel getrotzt und sind für die Abschaffung von Tierversuchen und die Schließung des LPT Labor Gut Löhndorf auf die Straße gegangen.

October 4th is the day for the animals, a day to raise awareness for their status and to improve animal welfare standards worldwide. World Animal Day is celebrated individually in every country, with one common goal: to make animal issues front page news. Voluntary ambassadors around the globe are actively introducing World Animal Day in their countries uniting millions of people to be animal advocates on this day. And in Cyprus this ambassador is Stella Stylianou – as I learned at the Argos Animal Sanctuary last November, while I was there for the German organisation Hundeliebe-grenzenlos e.V..

Stella has constantly been working very hard to improve the lives of animals in her country. It was in 2015 that I first came to visit the Argos to see, learn and document. And it was clear that there’s only one way out of this catastrophic situation: further explain and educate on the ground – and support local activities in their efforts to spay and neuter the animals, in order to control the situation and finally decrease the population of stray animals. This is what Stella is working for, being the founder and director of the Argos Animal Sanctuary and a member of Cyprus Voice for Animals (a union of animal welfare organisations in Cyprus).
And they are making progress – you can now see animal welfare developments achieved in Cyprus from 2008 to 2019

Sabine Rösch ist vor einigen Jahren auf die Insel gezogen, sie kümmert sich mit Unterstützung der Tierhilfe Fuerteventura e.V. liebevoll um die Streuner. Sie füttert sie, bringt sie zum Tierarzt wenn sie krank sind. Und sie kümmert sich darum, dass sie kastriert werden – häufig der einzige Weg, um langfristig das Leiden zu reduzieren.Ich habe Sabine einen Nachmittag mit der Kamera begleitet und sie und ihre so wichtige Arbeit kennengelernt.

Watoto was born in the wild in Tanzania, but was taken from her mother to live on display at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. She died in 2014 after a life in captivity. Here’s a short glimpse into her life – and if you’re already getting tired watching this, just imagine what it meant for her.

In light of the recent tragedy at the Krefeld Zoo, where 30 of our fellow beings died in a ravaging fire, zoos once again seem to be on so many peoples minds – but let’s be reminded, an innocent life behind bars is a long tragedy in itself.
